A lone traveller on the snowy road holds up a lantern as dusk turns to night.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The short answers. If yours is not here, the road may answer it.

Is Road Roamers free?

Yes. The game is free to play in your browser at play.roadroamers.com. It runs in the browser, with nothing to install. No price has been set for anything in future.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free account with Google. You can try the first night as a guest; at the first dawn the game asks you to sign in, and your guest journey carries over.

What happens to my old saves?

On your first sign-in, the game offers to upload each journey from this browser to your account.

Is there a leaderboard?

Yes: the furthest north, the most days, the most settlers and the biggest fleet, all time and this season. Journeys count when they’re tied to an account from the start. See the leaderboard.

Where can I play it?

In a web browser, on desktop, phone or tablet. It is not on Steam or any console store.

Does it run on my phone?

Yes. On phones and tablets the game switches to touch controls: a floating stick under your left thumb, three action plates under your right, tap to walk, pinch to zoom, and full-screen panels. The first time you play on a phone it starts on a lighter quality setting so it runs smoothly. The touch layout has been tested on phone and tablet screen sizes in Chrome; Safari on a real iPhone or iPad has not been fully tested yet.

Is multiplayer coming?

Co-op is next on the road, then tribes; neither is in the game yet. The plan is co-op for a small group of friends first, then persistent tribes in a shared world. Until then the game is single player. Read where it stands.

How are my journeys saved?

To your free account, as you play, so your journey goes with you to every device you sign in on. The game keeps three recent autosave points, and K saves at any time. You can still export a journey backup from the menu and import it again later.

What do I need to run it?

A current desktop or mobile browser with WebGL 2 (recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) and a reasonably modern graphics chip. The look settings let you trade detail for speed: quality, fog, shadows and camera distance. The world is streamed as you walk, so the first steps of a journey take a moment to prepare.

How do I play?

WASD to walk, E to use, Space to strike, L for the lantern, B to pitch camp, C to craft. F1 in the game lists every key, and every key can be remapped. See the full controls and your first night.

Is it hard?

You choose when you start a journey: Hearth (a gentler road for story and building), The Road (the intended journey), The Long Night (for veterans) or One Life (death ends the journey, though the lantern may pass to a settler). You can also tune the cold, hunger, foes, yields and raids yourself.

When do the landships arrive?

The Landships update (1.9) came out on 30 September 2026. It adds ten walking and rolling bases, from the two-legged Hearthrunner to the colossal Citadel Pilgrim. Meet them.

Does the game use AI?

The people in the world are driven by the game’s own rules, which run in your browser. There is one optional extra, off by default: villagers can speak generated lines if you add your own key for an AI provider in Settings, Voices. That key stays in your browser, and the game plays the same with it on or off.

Who makes Road Roamers?

Road Roamers is created by Ramy Bektor and developed by GetIllustrations, the illustration and icon library. About and credits.
